8 Things You Shouldn’t Do With a Bathroom

There’s one thing that all homes are going to have in common and that is the dreaded bathroom. Yes, the place you need to go to clean, relax and do your business. While this isn’t the most glorified place in the home, there are some things that you may want to do that you just shouldn’t.Shouldn't Do in Bathroom

If you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, here are eight things that you should never do with your bathroom -

 Watch the Entry Way
A bathroom is a small room as it is and if you have items plastered all over the place; you don’t want to risk something being knocked over when you open the door. So if you want to place a portable toilet paper holder or a cutesy magazine rack near the door, make sure that the door can open all the way before doing so.

Exposed Cables
Since a bathroom deals with water, you don’t really want to have anything exposed, such as cables. Whether it’s a trickling fountain or an electric toothbrush, always make sure that these items are stored away properly. Also, always make sure that your outlets are covered as well to prevent water or moisture from getting in.

Outdated and expired fixtures and products
The last thing that I want to see on your bathroom counter is a liquid soap bottle from 1988. If you’re that cheap, maybe it’s best that you hide the soap in a decorative container. While there’s nothing wrong with getting these decorative pieces at the dollar store, just make sure that you cater to the guest. This means new soap, toiletries if they are staying the night and good toilet paper.

Where are the rugs?
Chances are your floors are made of something besides carpet. If you are using carpet, shame on you! See #5 then. Since these floors can get awfully warm, it’s best to lay down a rug in front of the sink and at the toilet. The last thing that someone wants to do is wake up in the morning, head to the bathroom and feel like they are walking on a block of ice.

Using carpet
I don’t know why people do this but having carpet in your bathroom is absolutely disgusting. I only know one person that has carpet in their bathroom and the smell is atrocious. Just think of every time that a guy uses the bathroom and has a little backsplash. Well, that is going to go somewhere and that’s the carpet. Unless you’re going to steam clean your carpet every day (which I’m sure you won’t,) it’s so important that you just stick to tile or linoleum. Trust me, upgrading your carpet or flooring isn’t expensive.

Too many colors
A bathroom isn’t designed to become the centerpiece of a home. Most people just want to do their business and go on with their merry way. So as tempting as it may be, just stick with the neutral colors. You don’t have to throw in thirty colors, a few pictures and a big pot of potpourri. This isn’t necessary!

Improper lighting
Depending on the size of your bathroom, always make sure that your bathroom is well lit. At night, be sure to include a night light because you know yourself or a guest may have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. While you don’t want to have too much light, you don’t want too little either. Try to find the right mix that lights up the room just the way you want it too.

Knick knack overload
Going on the design angle again, it’s best that you avoid those tacky knick knacks that your grandma could have had. While it’s tempting to keep your bathroom looking good, again, it’s best to keep it simple. Trust me, people will thank you for it!

Tile Design Ideas to Remodel Your Bathroom – An Earth-Friendly Option

Tiles come in an almost endless array of colors and designs. When remodeling your bathroom, consider using tiles. Not only are they beautiful and versatile, but many tiles are made from recycled materials. Even if they are new, the materials used are sustainable and can be reused in the future.Bathroom Tile Design Ideas

Most tiles are made from glass, porcelain, or ceramic, or stone, but there are also tiles made from unexpected materials such as cork or bamboo, Both cork and bamboo are sustainable and renewable products that are earth friendly. With either of these two materials, care must be taken to keep them from water damage, as a bathroom is a damp room. They must be properly sealed after installation, and manually dried off after a bath or shower to keep moisture from seeping through.

The Beauty and Versatility of Tiles in the Bath

Some people will decorate their entire bathroom from floor to ceiling with tiles. This is especially feasible with a smaller bath or a powder room. These rooms can be made to look like little jewelry boxes when decorated with colorful glass mosaic tiles. Just let your imagination go wild. Just be sure to follow all instructions during a glass mosaic installation, especially if this is your first time attempting this on your own. You may find that some of the more intricate designs would be best left up to a professional.

The Ease of Cleaning Tiles

One of the greatest things about using tile in the bathroom is that most tile is waterproof and easy to clean. The rare exception to that would be cork or bamboo tiles, but they are still fairly easy to care for. The most important thing to remember about cork or bamboo is that they must be kept dry. Other tiles, such as ceramic, porcelain, or glass, will not be negatively affected by water. The one thing that would be needed would be to clean or spray regularly with an anti-mold product. This is because mold can grow in the grouted areas due to the constant moisture, especially in the shower area.

Tile as Artwork

Let’s face it, most of us are more concerned about the aesthetic impact of our bathrooms more than just the convenience. It makes us feel great when company comes over and gushes about the beauty of our homes, the bathroom being no exception. When your bathroom is outstandingly beautiful, you almost wish someone would ask to use it.

If you want your bathroom to look like artwork, consult with some of the professionals that can help make that happen. If you are an artist yourself, perhaps you can make such an impact on your own bathroom. That would increase your bragging rights, as you can take credit for the work being your own.

Points to Remember

Now can you see why using tile is a great option when remodeling your bathroom? Here are some of the benefits of using tile:

  • Made of mostly renewable materials
  • Some are made from recycled materials
  • Waterproof or water-resistant
  • Long-lasting
  • Beautiful
  • Increases your home’s resale value

1. Clean your cabinets & shelves

First and foremost organization rule one must adhere to is putting away the things that you no longer need. This holds good for cleaning your cabinets and shelves which are filled with soaps/colognes that you don’t use anymore. Organize the stuff that you put in there, by dividing areas to keep even products at different levels. This makes us easy to skim through the contents of the cabinet thereby helping us pick our necessity quickly.

2. Installing towel rails and hangers

This is the important method to keep your bathroom free of the moist and damp smell. These rails help in drying the towels and also help to keep one organized.

3. Labeling

Labeling is the best way to organize especially when it deals with your medicine cabinet. By labeling the medicine and sorting out based on its needs, one can easily avoid the tensions of a busy day.

4. Organizing the shower

Shower caddies that fit over the door of the shower are the best way to keep stuff related to shower, organized and neat. Each family member can choose to have a caddy for themselves with their body washes and shampoos finding a place too. Soap dispensers are also a cool way to avoid bringing body washes to the shower and further improvise your organizing skills.

5. Holders

By maintaining separate holders for your toothbrushes, toothpastes, cotton swabs, toilet paper, your bathroom can remain the way it is always – free of all the clutter.

6. Bathroom utilities

Apart from the soaps and shampoos, the utilities that u need to keep your bathroom clean must be intact to facilitate the sanitary purpose with ease. You can maintain separate shelves to keep the toilet brush, detergents, toilet washes so that one doesn’t need to go hunting when in need.

7. Proper waste disposal

Maintain a small bin that would help you in the proper disposal of wastes like cotton swabs, napkins, toilet papers etc. Clear the bins often to maintain good hygiene in the bathroom.

8. Organizing the space

Based on the size of your bathroom, choose the right kind of bath tubs, toilets, sinks and cabinets. Spacing them at the right places also helps to give a pleasant look of the bathroom.

9. Maintaining the orderliness

Among the above mentioned tips, this one is the most important as it helps to keep your bathroom clean and tidy on a long run. Keep track of what you use and don’t on a regular basis and try finding an alternate place for stuff that you don’t need inside a bathroom. Also, tidy the bathroom daily for a few minutes to avoid a marathon cleaning process when all the clutter has been mounted.

Hope these tips help you to keep your bathroom clean and hygienic.

How to Organize Bathroom for Maximum Space Usage

Organize BathroomBathrooms are by nature one of the smaller rooms in the house, so it’s always frustrating that so many of our daily living essentials go into them. From fixed furnishings like the toilet and bath, to necessities such as towels and mats, there’s a lot to consider when organizing your bathroom to have maximum space & essentials. This guide shows how to organize bathroom lighting, vanities, modern design, holders and boxes.

STORAGE

Storage is key when it comes to a well organised bathroom. Having clutter only leads to disorganization and dust, so items such as toiletry shelves, toothbrush holders and soap dispensers are great for keeping things organized. Having cupboards built into your sink unit or shelves in the shower or bath unit itself also work well, as you are using space already occupied and not taking up more space on available walls and flooring.

LIGHTING

Lighting a bathroom plays a big part in making the room look bright and clean. Dim lighting is never a good in a bathroom, as it can spread a yellowish tinge onto anything white, and make the room look smaller. If you’re going for a modern, clean look, then stainless steel, chrome and glass lighting is often the best route to take – recessed lighting is also good for smaller bathrooms, as only the essential parts of the light fitting can be seen.

MODERN DESIGNS

A lot can be said about a bathroom with a modern look and feel, as it helps keep the rest of the house in the 21st century and lends an extra touch of glamour. Using accessories with modern designs such as soap dispensers, towel radiators and even ergonomically designed toilet roll holders help keep the lines smooth and the design fresh.

PERIOD DESIGNS

On the other hand, there’s nothing quite like a period style bathroom, complete with accessories such as footstools and benches. Using a period look helps to lend grace and longevity to the design, using timeless classics that have been around and established for a long time, such as classic French furniture items. You just have to be careful that you don’t got OTT with this style of design, and place too many furnishing items in the room, which can lead to a cluttered effect.

HOLDERS AND BOXES

As with any room, there are always items we don’t necessarily want on show, but still essential – ladies products and spare toiletries, for example. Using items such as toilet paper holders and storage boxes hidden away in drawers and cupboards help to keep the room tidy, with nothing embarrassing on show and creating less work in terms of dusting and tidying every week.
