Bathtub Liner or Tub replacement: How to Know Which to Chose
If your home is one of the many built in the 1960s or 1970s, your bathroom is probably more than ready for an update. Many of the homes built thirty to forty years ago feature bathrooms with outrageous colors such as green, yellow, purple, blue, orange or pink. These colors may have been popular years ago, but today they are considered outdated.
When a homeowner is considering a bathroom remodel, he or she should first decide what can be done with the bathtub area. This will depend on what kind of bathtub you have.
Identifying the type of tub in your bathroom can be tricky. Cast iron and steel bathtubs are both coated in porcelain and can have a similar look and feel. There are a few ways you may be able to tell if the bathtub is cast iron or steel.
Homes built in 1970s often have cast iron bathtubs, unless the bathroom has been remodeled since the home was built. Here are a few tips to help figure out if you have a cast iron tub:
- Cast iron tubs often have a slightly declined back. Steel tubs generally have a steeper slope.
- When you knock on a cast iron tub, you hear a dull thud. A steel tub will have more hollow metal sound.
- Hold a magnet to the tub. If it sticks, your tub is steel not cast iron. If it doesn’t stick, your tub may still be steel, but a different grade of steel that is not as magnetized.
Homes built in the 1980s or later may have fiberglass bathtubs. These units are either one-piece units with no seems or it might have a fiberglass tub and three separate fiberglass wall panels, with caulking in between.
If your bathtub and walls have no seems, then you have a fiberglass one-piece unit. If the tub has any cracks, stains or nicks, then it is most likely made of fiberglass. These units only last eight to ten years.
After identifying the type of tub, you can decide how to update it based on your options.
Options for remodeling a cast iron bathtub
- Paint or spray the tub: Sometimes the cast iron bathtub may be in great shape and only lack the desired color that the homeowner wants. A quick and somewhat inexpensive fix for this situation is to hire a company to repaint or spray the bathtub. This process takes only a few hours and is the least expensive option. Unfortunately, the new color may begin to peel away after only a few years.
- Remove the bathtub completely: A cast iron tub can be broken and removed. If the cast iron tub is in poor shape or the floor underneath needs to be replaced, the only option may be to remove the cast iron tub. A bathroom remodeler can do this for you.
- Install a bathtub liner: The last option for remodeling a cast iron bathtub is to have a bathtub liner installed over the tub. Several national companies offer this service. When measured properly, a bathtub liner fits directly over a cast iron tub and a waterproof seal prevents water from getting between the tubs.
Companies may require the walls to be remodeled too. By replacing the old tile or surround, they are making sure that the waterproof seal is effective and they are ridding the area of any mold that may have grown behind the tiles.
Options for remodeling a steel or fiberglass bathtub
Many steel tubs and all fiberglass units are fragile. Because they cannot support the weight of a bathtub liner, it is recommended that you completely remove them. These units can be replaced with new fiberglass tubs or acrylic bathtub systems. There are several national companies that will remove old bathtubs and install new acrylic systems in one day.
Choosing between a bathtub liner and a tub replacement is not entirely up to the homeowner. Bathtub liners should never be installed over fiberglass tubs and are not recommended for steel tubs. If your home has a cast iron tub, a bathtub liner is an option. In some cases, removing the cast iron tub can do more harm than good. Of course, if the homeowner would prefer the cast iron tub be removed, there are several bathroom remodeling companies that would be happy to remove it.
